An interesting article in this week’s Washington Post raised the question whether loosing weight can ease sleep Apnea.
The study involved 264 over-weight and obese people with mild to severe sleep apnea. Some of participants were assigned to all kinds of weight loss and diet programs, while the others joined support groups and informational meetings about healthy living.
After one year, the people who participated the diet sessions lost 24 pounds on average, and those in the support groups lost about one pound. And the results? According to the post “The percentage of those in the weight-loss group who still had severe apnea was about half that of those in the other group.”
Sleep Apnea completely disappeared in 14% of the participants of the weight-loss sessions and 4% of the others. The people who stayed in the same weight suffered worse sleep apnea symptoms during that year.
12 million people in the US live with sleep apnea, are you one of them? So while you work on your diet, know that a CPAP machine can treat sleep apnea and make you sleep like a baby from the first night of use.
